Healthcare Market
Two million people each year become ill as a result of hospital-associated infections (HAIs). An average of 7 to 10 percent of adult patients, and as high as 30 percent of critically ill patients, are infected during hospital stays. Nearly 20,000 patients die each year as a direct result of these infections. HAIs contribute to the deaths of another 80,000 patients annually.
The estimated annual cost to treat HAIs is a staggering $4.5 billion. Even a moderate reduction in the rate of infection, which is a reasonable expectation with adherence to standard infection control techniques including hand hygiene, would result in significant savings. A study by the CDC has shown that approximately one third of HAIs can be prevented by implementing infection surveillance and following proper infection control guidelines.
